Man's best friend closed his eyes today, As his head was in my hands. The Doctor said he was in pain, it was hard for him to stand, he could hardly see, but his nose and ears did not fail, he knew we were with him until the end. The thoughts that scurried through our heads, As I cradled him in my arms. Were of his younger, puppy years, And OH...his many charms. Today, there was still a gentle nudge, With an intense "I love you gaze", Only a heart that’s filled with tears Remembering our joy filled days. But an Angel just appeared to me, And he said,"You should cry no more, GOD also loves our canine friends, He's installed a 'doggy-door"! and then he closed his eyes.
This morning the Wolfhound called a meeting. All dogs in Heaven were there, He wanted to announce a newcomer and to tell everyone to prepare.
"Gather 'round," he said to the crowd. "I have something important to say." " A long time ago, when I first arrived, I was told I should wait for this day."
Legend has it there'd be a great dog, that he'd come from earth down below. He'd stay with us through eternity and the leadership crown we'd bestow.
All the dogs sat and listened in silence, hearts raced with exciting suspense. Then the Wolfhound related this story while speaking with true reverence.
I had a dream about nine years ago, that this dog was now on his way. He'd be our New Leader this side of the bridge and he'd cross on a crisp Spring February day.
Each February I'd sit by the Bridge, not knowing which day or year he would come. Get out his crown and a cloud for his nap, for Today you'll meet the dog they called "RUGER"!
As the dogs sat 'round listening in awe, a sound from below reached their ears. Each knew the sound they had all heard before, it was that of a family in tears and sorrow for a departed Faithful Friend.
As they waited in sombering silence, the Wolfhound whispered "He's here!" the puppies all ran to the edge of the Bridge to see the one they had learned to revere.
Then a spot in the distance got larger. The Great Dog was proudly gaiting and prancing with ease. RUGER crossed the Bridge with his head held high and all the dogs just fell to their knees.
RUGER now waits at the Bridge where the dogs have set up his throne. When all his friends go to heaven some day, he'll be there to welcome them home.
A faithful Dog will play with you and laugh with you - or cry - He'll gladly starve to stay with you nor ever reason why, and when you're feeling out of sorts somehow he'll understand. He'll watch you with his shinning eyes and try to lick your hand. His blind, implicit faith in you is matched by his Great Love - the kind that all of us should have in the Master, up above. When everything is said and done, I guess this isn't odd, for when you spell "DOG" backwards you get the Name of GOD.
